L1A / L1B / Individual and blanket cases

L1 visa mock interview practice

Explain your transfer in your own words: the relationship between the companies, your work abroad, and the role you will perform in the United States. Practise follow-up questions about managerial responsibilities or specialized knowledge before your consular appointment.

One free interview for new accounts. Report preview included. No card needed to start.

L1A and L1B need different explanations.

Both use our US L-1 Transfer track. These reading guides help you prepare the facts that fit your case before you speak.

L1A: managers and executives

Explain the function or people you manage, decisions you make, and where your role sits in the organization. A title alone does not describe your responsibilities.

Read L1A questions and answer frameworks

L1 visa interview questions

Prepare facts, then practise follow-ups.

These are coaching prompts, not an official question list. Answer in your own words and stay consistent with your petition and supporting documents.

Questions about your transfer

Start with facts shared by L1A and L1B cases.

How are your current employer and the US entity related?
Name each entity and explain the parent, subsidiary, branch, or affiliate relationship as described in your petition. Separate the employing company from any client.
What have you done for the company outside the United States?
State your employment dates, location, role, and actual responsibilities. Keep the timeline consistent with your employment records.
Why are you being transferred, and what will you do in the US?
Describe the assignment, worksite, reporting line, and proposed duties. Connect your experience abroad to the work in the US rather than relying on your job title.
Is your case L1A or L1B, and is it individual or blanket?
Know the category and petition route your employer is using. Review unfamiliar terms with your employer's immigration team before your appointment.

L1A interview questions

Practise explaining managerial or executive responsibilities.

What decisions can you make without another manager's approval?
Give a real example of your authority, what you decided, and where escalation was required. Do not claim authority you do not have.
Who performs the day-to-day work in the function you manage?
Explain the organization, responsibilities, and your place in it. If you manage a function rather than a team, describe that arrangement accurately.
How will your US responsibilities differ from your current role?
Compare scope, reporting lines, and decisions using your petition and assignment details. Avoid turning a managerial explanation into a list of technical tasks.

L1B interview questions

Make your specialized knowledge understandable without jargon.

What company-specific knowledge will you use in the US assignment?
Name the product, process, system, or method, explain your own work with it, and connect that experience to the proposed duties.
How did you acquire that knowledge?
Describe actual training, projects, responsibilities, and time spent developing the expertise. A list of common technologies alone does not explain your specific experience.
Can you explain one example to someone outside your technical team?
Explain the problem, your contribution, and how the company uses the result. Avoid sharing confidential details; discuss the example at an appropriate level.

Fictional L1B practice exchange

Be specific enough for a follow-up.

This invented exchange illustrates an answer structure. It is not a real user transcript, an eligibility assessment, or an answer to memorize.

For L1A, use a real decision or management example instead of the technical example shown here.

Practice officerWhat knowledge will you bring to the US assignment?

Fictional applicantI work on our company's internal shipment reconciliation system. Over three years, I helped design its exception-handling rules and trained the regional operations team. My proposed US work is to adapt that system for the US entity's rollout.

Practice follow-upWhich rules did you work on, and how will you use that experience during the rollout?

What coaching feedback can help you improve.

Illustrative feedback below shows the kind of clarity to practise. Your report is generated from your own answers; this is not a report result or a visa approval probability.

An answer that needs detail

“I am a manager and will manage the US team.”

A useful next step

Name the function, explain your actual decision-making authority, and give one example that matches the duties described in your case. Do not invent a team size or hiring authority.

From reading to speaking.

  1. 1. Review your own case. Note the entities, work history, US assignment, and petition route. Use your employer's current documents and consulate instructions.
  2. 2. Start US L-1 Transfer practice. The button preselects L-1 after sign-in. Explain whether you are preparing for L1A or L1B; answer the officer's follow-ups using your actual experience.
  3. 3. Review and refine. Read your report preview, identify vague answers, and practise a clearer version aloud. Further interviews are available through a practice pass.

L1 interview practice questions, answered.

Can I practise an L1 visa interview for free?

New VisaInterview accounts include one free AI interview session and a report preview. Select US L-1 Transfer in practice. You can unlock that interview's full report separately, or buy a practice pass for more interviews and included complete reports while the pass is active.

Does the practice cover both L1A and L1B?

Both use the US L-1 Transfer practice track. Tell the AI officer whether your case is L1A or L1B and whether it is an individual or blanket petition. Your answers give the officer context for follow-up questions. The guides explain the different preparation focus for managers, executives, and specialized knowledge workers.

What should I prepare for an L1 blanket interview?

Review your employer's instructions and the consulate's current checklist. The State Department says applicants included in an L blanket petition must bring Form I-129S. Be ready to explain the company relationship, employment history, and proposed US duties consistently with your case documents.

Should L1 answers focus on home ties like a tourist visa interview?

Use preparation that fits your category. The State Department distinguishes L applicants from most temporary workers when describing evidence of intent to return home. Focus this practice on your actual transfer and petition; do not borrow a tourist or student visa answer script.

Are these the questions my consular officer will ask?

These are practice prompts, not an official question list or prediction. Questions and document requests depend on the case and consulate. Sample answers are fictional illustrations; use your own facts. VisaInterview provides interview practice and cannot determine eligibility or guarantee a visa decision.
