L1B Visa Interview Questions: Specialized Knowledge Practice

Practise L1B interview questions about company-specific knowledge, training, projects, and proposed US duties, with answer frameworks and a fictional exchange.

Preparing for an L1B interview means making your experience understandable to someone who does not work on your team. Practise explaining the company knowledge you use, how you acquired it, and what you will do during your US assignment. A list of technologies or an impressive title does not tell that story on its own.

USCIS describes L-1B classification for intracompany transferees with specialized knowledge. The USCIS Policy Manual discusses detailed descriptions of the work and evidence of the beneficiary's knowledge. The questions below are preparation prompts, not a legal test or a prediction of what your consular officer will ask.

Use the L1 visa mock interview guide for an overview, example feedback, and current practice prices. For managerial or executive cases, read the L1A interview questions.

Questions about your company-specific knowledge

1. What knowledge will you use in the US role?

Name the relevant company product, service, system, process, or method. Explain it in ordinary language, then describe your own involvement. Do not disclose confidential information; use an appropriate level of detail.

2. How did you acquire that knowledge?

Describe actual projects, training, responsibilities, and the time involved. Separate work you performed yourself from work performed by teammates. Keep your timeline consistent with your employment documents.

3. What is different about your experience with this system?

Explain the part you know in depth and how you use that knowledge. Give a specific example rather than saying only that the system is complex or proprietary. Do not claim you are the only person with the knowledge unless that is accurate.

4. Can you explain the system without technical jargon?

Start with the business problem, then describe what the system does and your contribution. Define internal terms. Prepare a short explanation first so you can add technical detail only when asked.

Questions about projects, training, and colleagues

5. Which project best demonstrates your experience?

Choose a real project you can discuss. Explain the task, your contribution, what you learned, and how it relates to the proposed assignment. Use outcomes you can support; avoid invented numbers or exaggerated ownership.

6. How would another employee learn this work?

Explain the actual training, experience, and context involved. Avoid guessing a training period or making unsupported comparisons with all other employees. Where your employer has documented training arrangements, review them before practising.

7. What responsibilities do other team members have?

Describe the division of work accurately. You can explain your experience clearly without claiming that your colleagues are unqualified. A useful answer identifies the work you know and where your responsibilities begin and end.

Questions about the transfer and US assignment

8. Why are you being assigned to the US entity?

Connect the business assignment to the experience you described. Explain the proposed duties, worksite, and reporting arrangement consistently with the petition and employer's support materials. Do not invent a requirement to displace or compare yourself against US workers.

9. What is the relationship between the companies?

Name the foreign and US entities and explain the relationship recorded in your case. If you work on a client's project, distinguish the client from your employer. Ask your employer's immigration team to clarify anything you do not understand.

10. What will a typical day in the US involve?

Describe the work you expect to perform and how it uses your knowledge. Avoid describing only the company's general goals. Be ready for a follow-up about a particular task, team, or deliverable.

A fictional practice exchange

Practice officer: "What specialized knowledge will you use?"

Fictional applicant: "I work on our company's internal shipment reconciliation system. I helped design its exception-handling rules and trained the regional operations team. The proposed US assignment is to adapt that system for the US entity's rollout."

Practice follow-up: "Which rules did you design, and how does that experience apply to the rollout?"

The example opens a clear line of questioning. It does not establish eligibility. Use the structure of a direct explanation plus a real example, rather than copying its project, training, or duties.

Preparing for an L1B blanket interview

Know whether your case uses an individual or blanket petition. The State Department's temporary worker guidance states that L applicants included in a blanket petition must bring Form I-129S. Review the consulate's current appointment instructions and the materials your employer provides.

Before practising, check:

  • Your employment dates and responsibilities abroad.
  • The company relationship and the proposed US duties.
  • The projects and training you can explain accurately.
  • The relevant petition or blanket-case documents supplied by your employer.
  • The passport, DS-160 confirmation, appointment instructions, and other case-specific documents you are told to bring.

Do not treat a generic online checklist as a substitute for the instructions for your appointment. For legal questions, consult your employer's immigration counsel. Practice feedback cannot determine whether your knowledge meets the legal standard.

Practise a conversation, not a memorized speech

Give one direct answer and let the next question expose what needs clarification. If an example requires five acronyms before it makes sense, try a simpler explanation of the same facts. If you are unsure of a fact, verify it rather than rehearsing a guess.
